Wm Donald Ltd. – Operational Carbon Assessment and Carbon Offset to become Carbon Neutral

Client: WM Donald Ltd.

Sector: Construction

Services: Carbon Assessment and Carbon Offset to Become Carbon Neutral

WM Donald, with over 40 years’ experience as industry leaders within Civil engineering and construction, with a fleet of over 100 vehicles, and over 160 employees, established a newly constructed “low carbon” office to the best practise standards for environmental performance through design, specification, construction and operation.

Their operations base contained many low energy elements including an array of Air source heat pumps for heating and hot water and 100kW of Solar Panels to offset their electrical demand. They have also introduced water scavenging to reduce consumption and installed a reed bed filtration system for all water discharges. WM Donald sought the assistance of Carbon-Zero to establish their Carbon footprint and identify opportunities for further emissions reductions.

Objectives

  • Conduct a site visit of their Netherley operations base and provide a complete and thorough emissions assessment of the business operations.
  • Summarise the findings in a comprehensive carbon assessment report.
  • Advise on an appropriate business metric for future carbon emissions comparisons
  • Advise on offsetting carbon emissions with the purchase of carbon credits supporting global carbon reducing projects in developing countries.

Results

  • Carbon-Zero engaged with WM Donald and their management team to outline boundaries of assessment and scope to establish all sources of energy spend.
  • Calculated current carbon emissions summarising Scopes 1,2 & 3 in line with UK BEIS emission factors for a 12-month period.
  • Identified operational areas with highest emissions, recommending areas for improvement.

Value To Client

“The team from Carbon-Zero have been an incredible support, especially as most of this assessment was carried out during Covid-19 restrictions. With their continued guidance we are now working on additional environmental initiatives that our team and clients will also benefit from.”
