Services: Assessment of Carbon Savings from Offshore versus Onshore Operations

World leading specialist in drilling waste management, TWMA have been in operation for nearly two decades, providing innovative offshore and on shore drilling waste treatment solutions. Leading the way when it comes to environmental standards.

TWMA’s drill cutting processing service can be carried out offshore or at their base in Peterhead, offshore operations delivers major savings in “skip & ship” transport and TWMA looked to Carbon-Zero to provide comparison of GHG emissions assessment of their “skip & ship” process, versus carrying out the process on the offshore rig or platform.

The offshore operations showed a 98% reduction in carbon emissions.

Objectives

  • Based on prior study of offshore operations, summarise onshore operations energy utilisation and associated GHG emissions, versus offshore processing
  • Based on a typical well depth, diameter and distance to Aberdeen calculate tonnage of cuttings and related transport emissions from offshore to the Peterhead base and the emissions relating to offshore treatment with no transport
  • Prepare summary report for clients highlighting opportunities for cost and emission savings of offshore processing versus “Skip & Ship”

Results

  • Carbon-Zero engaged with TWMA and their management team to outline boundaries of assessment and scope of the two scenarios for comparison.
  • Calculated current carbon emissions summarising Scopes 1,2 &3 in line with GHG reporting protocol and calculated carbon emissions based the two options.
  • Identified emissions savings of 69 tonne CO2e,(98%) per tonne of drill cuttings from offshore operations versus “Skip & Ship”.

Value To Client

“Carbon Zero’s study supported and validated the environmental value TWMA’s solutions can deliver.”
